How to Embed Video in Your Blog Post

This tutorial is really applicable to anywhere online you’d like to embed video. It could be in your WordPress blog, in your website, in your Blogger blog, and others. We’ll refer specifically to WordPress in this tutorial, but steps 1-5 are the same to grab the HTML code of your video no matter where you are eventually embedding it.

1. Your video needs to be uploaded to some service: YouTube, TwitVid, Viddler – any one of those. I’ll use YouTube in this example, just because it is most popular. All of these services have this same “embed” feature, though.

2. Go to your video’s page in the service it’s uploaded to. In YouTube It looks like this:

3. Next, click the button I’ve circled in red in the image above – it says “<Embed>”.

4. Up will pop a number of options for borders, border colors, and size. See pic below. I personally like the no-border option, and for most blogs you’ll want to stay a bit less than 500px wide. For this one I chose the 480px option.

5. After you’ve made all of your preferences, highlight all of the HTML code in the box as shown above, and copy it (right click and select copy, or Ctrl+C on a PC, or Cmd+C on a Mac).

6. Next, go back to the post you want to add this to in your WordPress site. You’ll want to choose the HTML tab, not the Visual tab, like shown in the picture below:

7. Find the area within the post text that you want to insert your video. Click to set your cursor there, and then paste the copied code (right click and select paste, or Ctrl+V on a PC, or Cmd+V on a Mac).

8. Click “Update Post” or “Save Draft” (depending on whether you’re post was already published or if you’re working on a draft) and after it successfully saves, select “Preview Post” or “View Post” to see your beautiful video in your blog post!

You are kidding! How did I miss this? I am going to give it a test run and then likely update this post. Thanks for the input!!!

It's even easier than that now – just put the video URL on one line, all by itself. WP will now embed it automagically.

Ah, but the downside is that it gives you basic fomatting – no borders, no border colors, no size preferences, etc. Works great for a simple option for the non-picky users though!
